SHiFT's Approach to Athletes' Mental Health
A 2024 study reports suicide has double for athletes and is the leading cause of death among athletes the past 20 years (British Journal of Sports Medicine). “Suicide is the outcome of medical illness, biological, psychological and social risk factors,” said Dr. Rebecca Bernert, a suicidologist. “The psychological impact of injuries, including fear of losing scholarships or opportunities for advancement, can further amplify feelings of hopelessness and despair,” said psychologist Dr. Urszula Klich.
At SHiFT, we recognize the intricate journey world-class athletes undergo—a journey often shadowed by the remnants of childhood trauma. In the realm of competitive sports, where physical excellence is celebrated, the silent battle with mental health remains a critical aspect often overshadowed. Our mission is to illuminate this path, focusing on the human spirit behind the athlete, acknowledging the parts molded by unique experiences into the champions we admire.
Childhood experiences, from emotional neglect to unrealistic pressures can plant seeds of self doubt that can flourish into profound anxiety and an endless pursuit of perfection. These unconscious narratives set the playing field to measure worth with victories and accolades, leaving them vulnerable to issues like performance anxiety and imposter syndrome. This is less about failing to win and more about failing to be "enough."
At SHiFT, we see beyond the symptoms of "performance anxiety" to its roots in the impact of past experiences. Our MasterSessions are designed to foster greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-acceptance and shed light on the real origins of our mental struggles. We believe in healing, empowerment, and the cultivation of authentic lives where athletes recognize their worth beyond their achievements.
Our approach is holistic. We provide the education rarely taught and a safe environment for athletes to confront and work through their past, in the privacy of their own environment and at their own pace. This journey of self-discovery allows athletes to redefine success, fostering a resilient identity that transcends their achievements.
Addressing the mental health and well-being of athletes requires a collective effort from the entire sports ecosystem: athletic directors, coaches, and agents. At SHiFT, we stand at the forefront, ready to guide athletes through this transformative journey, ensuring they receive the support necessary to thrive both in their sport and life
We envision a world where athletes are celebrated not just for their physical feats but for their courage to face and overcome the invisible opponents of mental health challenges. SHiFT is redefining athlete development, championing the importance of both physical health and mental well-being.
